Clay 3D Printing

My Ceramic 3D Printing Journey

Make Your Own Ceramic 3D Printer

My Ceramic 3D Printing Journey

I first began to use computation in my ceramics in 1999 when commissioned to produce a CD-ROM about my artistic practice. I became fascinated by the power of 3D modelling programs as digital drawing and visualisation tools. Fast forward to 2010 and my laptop was full of virtual ideas that I wanted to make as physical, tactile clay objects. 3D printing was the way forward and having been involved in the early development and pioneering of the process it is now how I make all my ceramic work.

A Guide to Clay 3D Printing

Make Your Own Ceramic 3D Printer

My Ceramic 3D Printing Journey

I wrote this Pdf guide in support of the workshops and teaching that I have done. It covers: Setting up a Clay 3D Printer, 3D Files for Clay Printing, Clay for 3D Printing, Converting a Reasonably Priced 3D Printer to Print with Clay, a Self Build Clay Printhead, Cura for preparing 3D files for Printing and making a drop spike for measuring the consistency of clay for printing.

Testing of Six Clays for Extrusion Clay 3D Printing

Make Your Own Ceramic 3D Printer

In 2013 there were no commercially available clay extrusion 3D printers on the market and so I developed my own. Having done so I Open Sourced the design with the view that others would

develop the technology further.  This document is not a blue print for building a 3D printer but more my documentation of what worked for me. My experience is as an artist and not as an engineer or computer specialist.

Testing of Six Clays for Extrusion Clay 3D Printing

Testing the relationship between, Layer, Speed, Nozzle and Material Consistency

Testing of Six Clays for Extrusion Clay 3D Printing

Testing of Six Clays for Extrusion Clay 3D Printing

I have written up the results of these test as downloadable Pdf's. This test looks at measuring clay consistency, the ratio of clay to water and then clay shrinkage when bone dry, bisque fired and thirdly fired to a low stoneware temperature. These tests help make useful decisions over which clays are best for extrusion 3D printing.

Testing the relationship between, Layer, Speed, Nozzle and Material Consistency for extrusion clay 3

Concentrating on print quality in extrusion clay 3D printing, these tests focus on three important factors when printing. First the ration between nozzle size and slice or layer height. Secondly the influence of print speed and thirdly whether using soft,  stiff or hard clay is advantages.

Samples of extrusion 3D printed clay

This test looks at some of the considerations and the principals of formulating and testing a clay body for extrusion 3D printing. The difference of clay consistency on surface quality and print capability is observed, as is the addition of additives to improve these qualities.

Jonathan Keep Ceramic 3D Printing Videos

Ceramic 3D Printing with WASP 40100

In this video I runs through how I use the large Delta WASP 40100 clay printer, but as I say there are probably as many ways of working with this machine as people who use them. I demonstrate filling the clay container and go through the operating controls. At the end is information on the setting use in the CURA slicing software.

An Overview of Ceramic 3D Printing

This overview of Ceramic 3D printing has been prepared with artists, creatives and designers in mind, but I hope it will still be of general interest to all. This is one of five videos recorded from online teaching. I offer an introduction  to  types of ceramic  3D  printing, then examples  of  clay  extrusion 3D printing and finally issues around the use of digital technology in ceramics.

Computers, Computation and Clay

Here I offer my personal perspective on the subject of Digital Ceramics. I relate digital technologies to traditional ways of working and suggest technology is unavoidable. I look at technology in the ceramic studio, technology and the handmade, digital terminology and introduce computer 3D graphics. Finally I look at ways of working with digital technology and software.

Clay Extrusion 3D Printing - The Process

This video looks at the techniques and processes involved in clay extrusion 3D printing.  I go from digital file to physical print. Practically and theoretically, I cover the slicing of digital 3D models, clay preparation and the understanding of clay properties for extrusion printing. A view on selecting extrusion nozzle size and layer height. Finally the video shows some of the techniques I use of  clay  printing

Remote Clay 3D Printing Demonstration

This is another of the videos recorded from online teaching during the Covid pandemic. It is a slightly chaotic studio demonstration of the practicalities of clay extrusion 3D printing. I apologise in advance for the editing. The video follows me modelling and attempting to print a cup. I then print a digital file emailed during the demonstration from Reykjavík.

Ultimaker Cura - Slicing for Clay 3D Printing

With Ceramic 3D printing we tend to use the technology developed for plastic printing and adapt it for clay material. The very powerful Ultimaker Cura slicing software is free to download and use but there are no settings for clay. This video offers guidance on how to do that. This video outlines setting up a Ceramic 3D Printer Profile, Clay as a Material and a Slicing Profile for clay extrusion 3D printing.

10 Years of Extrusion 3D Printing - Part 1

This is an extract from a presentation on Estonian Academy of Art TV in conjunction with an Exhibition 'Ceramic Dimensions' in November 2020. Part 1 concentrates on a personal reflection of the previous 10 years of clay 3D printing. The webinar session was longer covering questions, discussion and a tour of the exhibition but I did not have the necessary permissions to reproduce this content.

10 Years of Extrusion 3D Printing - Part 2

This is Part 2 of the presentation I did for the Estonian Academy of Art TV in conjunction with an exhibition 'Ceramic Dimensions' - November 2020. This video is more technical, about machines, process and material.
