Alongside his ceramics works Jonathan Keep makes drawings that he describes as being about mark making. Where his sculptural pots are about form and how our hunter-gatherer minds relate to form, these drawings are about how we respond to two dimensional marks.
Initially generated from code, marks are made using simulations of natural patterns such as simple fractals, symmetries and random noise. These elements are overlaid and composed into the complete image. Like the expression and communication a composers archives in sounds, Jonathan seeks in visual marks.
His interested is in the interpretation of the objective world out there and our inner subjective worlds. The relationship between animal instinct and artistic intuition, where Jonathan understand intuition to be an inner, instinctive sense. An ability to process patterns and information inherited from a collective past.
